The Top 10 Scenic Highways for Truckers

November 18, 2020

As truck drivers, we get to see some of the most gorgeous landscapes while on the road. Drivers see so many different parts of the country throughout their careers, and you won’t find a carrier that says they haven’t had their breath taken away on multiple occasions. We’ve compiled a list of “the most beautiful” scenic highways so you can look out for them on your next trip.

San Juan Skyway

This loop goes through San Juan National Forest and always provides truck drivers with stunning views of mountains and landscapes. To accompany this scenery, a few quaint mountain towns lie throughout the route including Silverton and Telluride. The road is windy but rewarding.

Westbound routes from Montana to Idaho

As one driver put it, “The most peaceful 700 miles on the road.” This stretch of scenic highway has wonderful mountainous ranges, meadows, and forests with never-ending greenery.

I-70 through Utah and Colorado

This scenic highway is a landscape that goes from the mountains of Colorado to the high desert of Utah with shocking rock formations for miles. It includes gorgeous drives through Glenwood Canyon, Arches National Park, and Goblin Valley State Park.

Seward Highway — Alaska

We’ve heard this famously scenic highway described as miles of snow-capped mountains, beautiful beaches, and a glimpse of local wildlife. You’ll drive through famed landmarks such as Beluga Point: a view of mountains in the background covered with fog and clouds and railroad tracks in foreground, Moose Pass: a breathtaking Alaskan countryside in Chugach National Forest, and Turnagain Arm: a spot of gorgeous coastlines with an abundance of wildlife. It is a drive full of views you won’t get at home or in an office.

California Coastline - Highway 1 or called PCH

Highway 1, or better known as PCH (the Pacific Coast Highway) is one of the most iconic and scenic highways in the US. The coastal scenery is unlike anything else and you have a perfect view of the road going either direction. On this stretch, you pass over some incredibly famous bridges: The Bixby Bridge in Big Sur (pictured) and The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

US 83 aka the Road to Nowhere

This four-lane scenic highway crosses 1,885 miles of rolling grasslands and countryside between Canada and Mexico. A quiet drive, but there’s lots to see. Whether you stop in at The World’s Largest Buffalo Skull in Abilene, Texas, or see the Dismal River running through the Sandhills of Nebraska from the road, this scenic highway has a countless number of unforgettable sights.

Utah’s Route 12

Utah’s Route 12 is a 122-mile stretch of beauty, passing through stunning parks such as Bryce Canyon National Park and Dixie National Forest.

Pikes Peak Ocean to Ocean (PP-OO) Highway

This historic and scenic highway takes you from San Francisco all the way to New York City, tying the industrial centers of the U.S. to the mountains and more. Stop in Colorado Springs and you’ll catch a stunning view of snow-capped Pikes Peak. Or, stop in Springfield, Illinois, for some historical sights. Along this road, you’ll see everything from agriculture to mining districts.

I-64 in WV

West Virginia will take you through overlooks of valleys that make you feel like you’re driving in a painting. Make sure to take a pit-stop at Tamarack, a rest stop just off of I-64 in Beckley. This scenic highway has a taste of Appalachian sights and sounds.

Blue Ridge Parkway - VA & Carolinas

If you’re ever on the lower East Coast heading through the Carolinas and Virginia, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a must-drive. It takes you through the Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah National Parks. Pictured above is the Linn Cove Viaduct which is a 1,243 feet long bridge that snakes around Grandfather Mountain in western North Carolina.
