Detention for Truck Drivers

August 2, 2021

Detention can be frustrating and confusing if you don’t know if you will be compensated for it. This is the duration of time from when a carrier is held up at the shipper or receiver past the designated appointment time for reasons outside the carrier’s control.

Usually, a grace period will exist before detention begins to include the estimated time it takes for the facility to load/unload the trailer. On the BOL (Bill of Lading), in and out times need to be signed by the facility for the broker/shipper to provide detention payout.

As facilities optimize their operations, schedules are booked to capacity with a small window for error. Delays can occur for a variety of reasons because there are so many stakeholders in the trucking industry.

Shippers and brokers have different detention policies with grace periods and caps that may vary. Because there are multiple participants involved, trust becomes a concern in situations like detention. Today, the majority of brokers and shippers require timestamps signed off by a facility employee before detention payout can be initiated. Thus, time with receiving the detention payout is further delayed as well with the shipment lifecycle.

If this happens to you, SmartHop wants to ensure you are compensated for your time. That’s why, with the Stress-Free Guarantee, we’ll give you a payout so you’re not left empty-handed. And we’ll deal with recovering the detention payment from the broker so you don’t have to worry about it.

We hope this guarantee can handle some of the stress while you’re waiting for your load.
